No. Sleep dentistry and laughing gas are two different things. Understanding the difference helps parents choose the right option for their child at Sierk Children's Dentistry in Highlands Ranch, CO.
What Laughing Gas Is
Laughing gas is nitrous oxide. Your child breathes it through a small mask we place over their nose during the appointment. It produces a mild, relaxed feeling. Your child stays fully awake and aware throughout. The effects wear off within minutes of removing the mask. Most children can go back to school or normal activities right after the visit.
What Sleep Dentistry Is
Sleep dentistry uses deeper sedation, either oral sedation or general anesthesia, to put a child in a much deeper state of relaxation or full sleep during treatment. Your child will have little to no awareness during the procedure and will not remember it afterward. Recovery takes longer than laughing gas, and a parent or guardian must stay with the child for the rest of the day.
Which One Is Right for Your Child?
Sleep dentistry vs. laughing gas comes down to the level of anxiety and the type of treatment needed. Laughing gas suits mild to moderate anxiety and most routine procedures. Sleep dentistry is reserved for children with severe dental fear, significant special needs, or extensive treatment that cannot be managed with lighter sedation.
