Reduced Anxiety

Sometimes, kids feel anxious at the dentist's office. Sedation dentistry can make their treatment soothing and relaxing.

Sedation dentistry may be the solution if your child is fidgety and has trouble being still during more extended treatments.

Enhanced Comfort

Frequently Asked Questions

Sedation dentistry in Highlands Ranch allows our team to help children with anxiety or special needs get the dental treatment they need. With different levels of dental sedation, we can provide high-quality dentistry for every small smile, no matter their needs.

Laughing Gas

Our mildest form of sedation is a breathable gas your son or daughter receives through a mask worn during treatment. Also called nitrous oxide, laughing gas is safe for kids and doesn't leave them with lingering or unwanted side effects.

In-Office or Hospital-Based Anesthesia

We have an in-house pediatric anesthesiologist that can provide a deeper level of sedation if that's what your child. This helps children relax during more extensive or complex treatment procedures. We can also provide this level of sedation in a hospital setting if that's more ideal for your son or daughter.

With a deeper level of sedation, our pediatric anesthesiologist monitors your child's heart rate and vital signs throughout the procedure to ensure their safety and comfort.

If you think your child would benefit from treatment under anesthesia, contact our dental office at (303) 865-4066 and schedule an appointment to discuss your options with Dr. Jon. We also have a dental office serving children in Highlands Ranch, CO.

Dental anxiety is a common occurrence in adults, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that children often experience nerves when visiting the dentist. At Jonathan Sierk Children’s Dentistry, we have over 20 years of experience with sedation dentistry, so you can be confident that your child will receive the best possible care. A common question we hear is whether there will be side effects after sedation dentistry; keep reading to find out more.

Sedation Dentistry Side Effects

Different kinds of sedation can be used during a dental procedure, and the side effects can vary depending on the type of sedation. The following side effects can occur after sedation dentistry:

Nitrous Oxide – If we use nitrous oxide or “laughing gas” during a dental procedure, your child will feel completely calm. The effects of nitrous oxide wear off quickly and before you leave our practice.  We have your child breath 100% oxygen to eliminate and possible side effects, prior to leaving our care.

Oral Conscious or IV Sedation – If our pediatric anesthesiologist administers sedation your child may experience the following side effects:

  • Loss of memory about the procedure
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Confusion
  • Slower reflexes

These side effects typically subside after a few hours, but some children may experience side effects for up to 24 hours. We ask you accompany your child to the restroom and stay with them for a full 24 hours.

Sedation & General Anesthetic Technology

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide, also known as "laughing gas," is a completely safe and effective technique for calming nervous patients and relieving pain and discomfort.

With our "laughing gas," patients remain awake, but are more relaxed and at ease during their appointment. Nitrous oxide is delivered through a comfortable and flexible face mask that gently provides a combination of oxygen and nitrous oxide. Each time a patient is under sedation of any kind, we monitor them to make sure they are safe and comfortable during their visit.

General Anesthesia

We understand that having a child under sedation for a procedure can make any parent feel anxious. At Sierk Children's Dentistry, your child is in the most capable hands, as we work with highly trained pediatric anesthesiologists to safely administer anesthesia.

Dr. Jon and our dental team have extensive experience in treating children in a safe, calm environment where they feel comfortable and cared for. General anesthesia is a safe and modern method of keeping children comfortable.
