Crowns & Fillings
Tooth decay is the most common chronic childhood illness, and can affect speech, nutrition, learning, playing, and a child’s overall quality of life. Sometimes, cavities can be overlooked by parents, as they are typically located in hard-to-see and hard-to-reach places in the mouth, such as between teeth, in the back molars, or close to the gums.
Thankfully, tooth decay is also preventable and treatable with the help and support of our team at Sierk Children's Dentistry. When cavities are caught when they are small, they are much easier to treat. If left untreated, cavities can grow, causing damage to the tooth, or require a crown, filling, or even an extraction.
Smile-Saving Crowns and Fillings
Sierk Children’s Dentistry can save your child’s smile from cavities by using comfortable and effective crowns and fillings. Typically, we use local anesthesia and nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”) for a crown placement as this helps keep our young patients relaxed and pain-free. Our crowns and fillings are customized to meet your child’s needs and to help them achieve a healthy, beautiful smile.
Comfortable Dental Crowns Fit for Royalty
A crown is a tooth-shaped cap that covers and protects the tooth, and they are preferred for larger repairs, such as for broken teeth or teeth with large cavities. Crowns are safe and durable and help keep the teeth healthy and strong until they are naturally replaced by permanent teeth.
We offer two types of crowns:
Known for their strength, durability, and aesthetics, zirconia crowns mimic the color and strength of natural teeth. Zirconia crowns are biocompatible, which means they are not harmful to living tissue. They also do not contain any metal, making them an excellent option for patients with metal allergies, or those who prefer metal-free restorations. The smooth surface of zirconia crowns helps reduce plaque buildup, chips, and fractures. They also promote healthy tissue response and do not darken the gums as some metal restorations do.
Stainless Steel Crowns
Stainless steel crowns are durable, silver “hats” that have been used in dentistry for many decades. Stainless steel crowns are very common and safe for children, and they are used to protect baby teeth from further decay or fractures.
These crowns rarely need to be replaced or repaired, and the procedure is easy and straightforward. Stainless steel crowns are long-lasting and cost-effective, and they preserve the primary tooth so it can correctly guide the permanent tooth into place. Once the tooth is covered by the crown, your child can more comfortably and effectively eat, smile, talk and laugh.
Our kid-friendly fillings and special fluoride treatment are excellent ways to protect teeth weakened by cavities or breaks.
Dental fillings are used to fill a hole left in the tooth once decay is removed. Once Dr. Sierk gently and thoroughly removes the decay, he fills the tiny hole with tooth-colored composite resin, smooths the tooth, and polishes it to make it look as good as new. Fillings are a great option for children of all ages.
Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF)
Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) is an FDA-approved antibacterial liquid used to control dental caries and prevent further tooth decay. This method is non-invasive and used with young children who may be unable to complete typical treatment.
SDF is composed of silver and fluoride and strengthens the underlying protective layer of teeth called dentin. Fluoride actively helps stop tooth decay, relieves tooth sensitivity, and prevents cavities from reappearing. Though SDF is an excellent treatment for some of our patients, it does not eliminate the need to repair a tooth’s function or appearance.
