Frequently Asked Questions

dental crowns for kids | kids smilingCrowns for children can play a vital role in maintaining oral health and preventing complications. When baby teeth suffer severe decay, damage, or structural weakness, dental crowns provide a durable solution to protect the teeth and restore their form and function. Baby teeth are crucial for guiding permanent teeth into proper positions, and preserving them ensures healthy development. Modern pediatric crowns are designed to be comfortable, durable, and aesthetically pleasing, ensuring a natural appearance.

What is a Dental Crown?

Crowns are commonly used when a large amount of natural tooth structure is lost due to decay or fracture. They are pre-fabricated and cover the entire tooth, protecting it from further damage and ensuring normal chewing and speaking capabilities. Crown restorations are also beneficial for children by preventing premature tooth loss, often leading to misalignment or spacing issues for future permanent teeth. Primary teeth can be restored with stainless steel (silver) or Zirconia (tooth-colored) materials.

Yes, children need to keep their primary teeth until their permanent dentition come in naturally. Cavities in baby teeth can lead to serious issues and should be treated right away to avoid any of these potential issues:

  • Pain and discomfort — Left untreated, a cavity can cause pain and sensitivity.
  • Dental infectionTooth decay can spread and infect other teeth.
  • Damage to permanent teeth — Untreated cavities can lead to tooth decay on your child’s permanent teeth.
  • Premature tooth loss — Cavities can cause baby teeth to come out before they’re ready, causing spacing issues.
  • Alignment issues — Premature tooth loss can lead to alignment issues if your child’s other teeth shift into the gaps.

When a child needs a dental crown, their parents naturally prefer an option that is both durable and natural-looking. Here’s where zirconia comes in. Zirconia crowns are quickly becoming the preferred choice in pediatric dentistry because they offer several advantages over traditional crowns made from stainless steel or resin.

Why Are Zirconia Crowns for Kids So Good?

Perhaps the biggest benefit of pediatric dental crowns made of zirconia is their appearance. These crowns are tooth-colored and blend seamlessly with surrounding teeth. This quality is especially important for front teeth, where, unlike their metal counterparts, zirconia crowns don’t give off a gray tint or metallic shine.

Zirconia dental crowns are also highly durable. They resist fractures and wear, which means they can hold up well to chewing and the everyday demands placed on children’s teeth. Their smooth surface makes it harder for plaque to stick, reducing the risk of gum irritation and decay around the crown.

Additionally, zirconia crowns are biocompatible, which means they are gentle on the gum tissue and less likely to cause allergic reactions. Parents who want a strong, safe, and natural-looking option often find zirconia to be the best balance of function and aesthetics.

pediatric dental crowns | girl smilingLet's get straight to the point: yes! Although many people associate dental crowns with adults, the truth is that children can also benefit from this type of dental restoration.

A dental crown is simply a "cap" that Dr. Jon places over a tooth to protect it from further damage. A child may need a dental crown if they have a baby tooth that is severely decayed or damaged. While in other cases, a child may need a dental crown after having a gentle pulp therapy procedure. No matter the reason, dental crowns can be very beneficial for children. Not only do they help to restore the function and appearance of the affected tooth, but they also help to protect the tooth from further damage.

We offer two types of crowns in our Highlands Ranch and Castle Pines pediatric dental offices:

Zirconia crowns are known for their strength, durability, and aesthetics. They also look and feel like natural teeth. Zirconia crowns don't have any metal in them, making them an excellent choice for patients who are allergic to metal or prefer metal-free restorations.

Stainless steel crowns have been used in dentistry for a long time because of their cost-effectiveness, durability, and safety. Essentially, they serve two purposes: to protect baby teeth from further breakage or decay and to help guide the adult tooth into place.

pediatric emergency dentist | sierk children's dentistryWe can restore your child’s chipped tooth in our Highlands Ranch or Castle Pines dental office.

Children chip their teeth sometimes. For example, they may chew on a hard object like ice or play roughly during recess at school. No matter the cause, we offer methods to restore the chipped tooth to health and beauty.

How Dr. Sierk treats the tooth depends on the complexity or severity of the chip.

Options for Tooth Chips

Our pediatric dentist uses composite resin, the same material found in tooth-colored fillings, for a small chip that is primary teeth. We can spread the malleable resin over a tooth to fill the chip. We then set it with a special light and finish with a thorough polish.

For more significant tooth chips, we may recommend a prefabricated dental crown. Dental crowns conceal the chip but also prevent further breakage and potential loss. A dental crown is a cover that fits over the tooth. It will look like your child’s natural adult teeth, allowing them to chew and smile without worry.

Comfortable Dental Crowns Fit for Royalty

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that covers and protects the tooth, and they are preferred for larger repairs, such as for broken teeth or teeth with large cavities. Crowns are safe and durable and help keep the teeth healthy and strong until they are naturally replaced by permanent teeth.

To ensure the best fit for your child's smile, we offer two specialized options:

  • Zirconia (Tooth-Colored) Crowns: These are 100% metal-free and biocompatible. They are a favorite for parents who want a natural look, as they mimic the color of real teeth and are very gentle on gum tissue.
  • Stainless Steel (Silver) Crowns: Often called "superhero hats," these have been the gold standard in pediatric dentistry for decades. They are incredibly durable, cost-effective, and perfect for back molars that do the heavy lifting during chewing.

While both options provide excellent protection, the right choice often depends on the tooth's location and your family's preferences for aesthetics and durability. Use the dental crowns comparison guide below to see how these two "tooth hats" perform side-by-side.

Dental crowns are a marvel of modern dentistry for patients of all ages. This includes pediatric dentistry, where crowns are necessary for kids whose teeth become damaged or weakened.

Pediatric Dental Fillings

Our kid-friendly fillings and special fluoride treatment are excellent ways to protect teeth weakened by cavities or breaks.

Tooth-Colored Fillings

Dental fillings are used to fill a hole left in the tooth once decay is removed. Because baby teeth act as placeholders for the future, Dr. Sierk focuses on treating cavities early to prevent infections and keep your child’s smile on track. Once Dr. Sierk gently and thoroughly removes the decay, the procedure to fill the cavity doesn't take long. He will fill the tiny hole with tooth-colored composite resin, smooth the tooth, and polished it to make it look as good as new. Fillings are a great option for children of all ages.

Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) is an FDA-approved antibacterial liquid used to control dental caries and prevent further tooth decay. This method is non-invasive and used with young children who may be unable to complete typical treatment.

SDF is composed of silver and fluoride and strengthens the underlying protective layer of teeth called dentin. Fluoride actively helps stop tooth decay, relieves tooth sensitivity, and prevents cavities from reappearing. Though SDF is an excellent treatment for some of our patients, it does not eliminate the need to repair a tooth’s function or appearance.

Crowns & Fillings Technology

Zirconia Crowns

Our pediatric zirconia (tooth-colored) crowns are durable and attractive, giving your child a strong and beautiful smile. Zirconia crowns look, feel, and function much like natural teeth, and we use them to protect teeth weakened by decay, multiple fillings, or pulpal therapy.

Tooth-Colored Fillings

Tooth-colored fillings—also called composite resin fillings—match the shade and physical appearance of children's natural teeth. Our tooth-colored fillings are gently bonded to teeth affected by decay, keeping teeth strong and functional.

With our durable, tooth-colored fillings, your child can eat, talk, laugh, smile, and play without metal fillings.
