Sierk Children's Dentistry

Can my child eat prior to a dental visit?

Parents often ask us if their child should eat before visiting the dentist. At Sierk Children’s Dentistry, with some exceptions, we recommend children have a light meal or snack before their appointments.

Why Does Eating Before an Appointment Matter?

Arriving with a comfortably full tummy helps children feel more relaxed, less irritable, and better able to avoid lightheadedness during longer visits.

That said, avoid heavy, sticky, or sugary foods right before coming in. These can leave residue on teeth and complicate the cleaning process. Opt instead for simple, healthy choices like fruit, yogurt, or toast.

Special Considerations for Certain Appointments

It’s important to note that some treatments, particularly those involving sedation or anesthesia, may require an empty stomach. In these cases, Dr. Sierk and our team will provide specific instructions to follow before the visit. As part of the process, we will ask you to share your child’s medical history and any concerns so that we can customize a care plan for their comfort and safety.
