Sierk Children's Dentistry

Can my child eat prior to a dental visit?

Parents often ask us, "Should my child eat before their dental visit?" At Sierk Children’s Dentistry, with some exceptions, we recommend that children have a light meal or snack before their appointments.

Why Does Eating Before an Appointment Matter?

Starting the visit with a comfortably full tummy helps children feel more relaxed, less irritable, and better able to avoid lightheadedness during longer visits.

We recommend simple, healthy choices like fruit, yogurt, or eggs. Please avoid heavy, sticky, or sugary foods right before coming in, as these can leave residue on teeth and complicate the cleaning process.

Special Considerations for Certain Appointments

It’s important to note that some treatments, particularly those involving sedation or anesthesia, may require an empty stomach. In these cases, Dr. Sierk and our team will provide specific instructions to follow before the visit. As part of the process, we will ask you to share your child’s medical history and any concerns so that we can tailor a care plan to ensure their comfort and safety.
