At Sierk Children's Dentistry in Castle Pines, CO, we understand that a tooth extraction can be a nerve-wracking experience for kids (and their parents!). However, with careful preparation and aftercare, we can ensure a smooth and comfortable tooth extraction process. Here are some tips to help prepare your child for a tooth extraction and care for them afterward.

Before the Extraction

  • Explain the Procedure: Talk to your child about the procedure in a simple, child-friendly way. Avoid scary words like "drills," "needle," or "pain,'" and let them know seeing the dentist is a normal process to keep their mouth healthy.
  • Stay Positive: Children often mirror their parents' emotions so try to keep a positive attitude.
  • Schedule a Pre-Visit: During a pre-visit, we can show your child around, introduce them to our friendly team, and familiarize them with the environment.

During the Extraction

Our experienced dental team is trained to manage children's anxiety and ensure a comfortable experience, so you rest assured knowing your child is in very caring and capable hands. We encourage a parent or guardian to stay in the room during the procedure for added comfort and reassurance. A pleasant distraction is also helpful to many children, so encourage your child to bring a favorite toy or blanket. Listening to calming music or a beloved audiobook can be soothing for kids, too.

After the Extraction

  • Rest and Recuperate: Your child will need to get plenty of rest so they can heal from the procedure.
  • Soft Food Diet: Offer your child a diet of soft, cool foods and drinks after the extraction to help alleviate discomfort. Smoothies, yogurt, mashed potatoes, and ice cream are all good options.
  • Ice Packs: Applying an ice pack on the cheek near the affected area can help reduce swelling and numb the pain.
  • Medication: Use over-the-counter pain medication as directed to help curb pain and discomfort.
  • Oral Hygiene: Avoid brushing the extraction area for the first 24 hours. After that, gently rinse with warm salt water to help keep the area clean.
  • Follow-up Care: Schedule an appointment to ensure the extraction site is healing correctly.
