Dr. Sierk is a gentle pediatric dentist in Highlands Ranch who provides stress-free tooth extractions. Dr. Sierk will discuss all expectations for the tooth extraction process––before, during, and after the procedure.

Here are some tips for helping your child recover from a tooth extraction.

1. Get Plenty of Rest

Rest is crucial for healing. We recommend monitoring your child and ensuring they don't overexert themself. They should refrain from strenuous activity that can dislodge the blood clot. When they lie down, make sure they prop their head up with a pillow and don't let them sleep on the same side where they had the procedure. Dr. Sierk recommends that your child rests for at least 48 hours after the extraction.

2. Only Eat Soft Foods

After removing the gauze from your child's mouth, they can eat soft foods and cold, non-carbonated drinks. Yogurt, ice cream, and Jell-O are great options until they can eat solid foods again, usually three days or more after the extraction. Be sure your child gets plenty of fluids and monitor them while eating so they don't chew near the extraction site.

3. Use a Cold Compress

Mild inflammation and swelling are expected after tooth extraction. You can place a cold compress on their cheek to reduce the swelling and relieve discomfort. We recommend putting it on their face for 15-minute intervals. Swelling typically goes down after 48 hours.

4. Keep Your Child's Mouth Clean

Be sure to help your child maintain good dental hygiene to reduce the risk of infection. They can still brush their teeth after the procedure but should avoid brushing close to the extraction site for the first 24 hours. They can resume regularly brushing and flossing after the first 24 hours, but they must be very gentle and avoid spitting or gurgling. Your child can gently rinse their mouth with warm, salty water.
