Few things are harder for a parent than watching your child feel anxious or scared. Unfortunately, it does happen. And, historically, dental treatments are a common cause. Fortunately, modern pediatric dental sedation options allow kids to safely receive the care they need in comfort, with their individual needs in mind.

Whether your child is very young, suffers from dental anxiety, has special healthcare needs, or requires extensive treatment, sedation dentistry can help transform an otherwise stressful experience into a positive one!

At Sierk Children's Dentistry, Dr. Jon Sierk and our compassionate team believe that parents should know exactly what to expect before treatment begins. While every child is unique and every level of sedation isn’t appropriate for every procedure, understanding how each option works can help ease your mind about your child's care.

Safety and Purpose: Why Pediatric Dentists Use Sedation

Sedation isn't simply about making children sleepy. Its primary purpose is to keep them comfortable so that treatment can be completed safely and efficiently. A relaxed child is often better able to cooperate, making procedures smoother for everyone involved.

Parents receive detailed instructions before the appointment, and every recommendation follows established pediatric safety guidelines. Before recommending any form of sedation, Dr. Sierk carefully reviews your child's medical history, medications, and the complexity of the planned treatment.

Level 1: Minimal Sedation (The Floating and Giggly Stage)

What Is It and How Is It Given?

Minimal sedation most commonly involves nitrous oxide, often called "laughing gas," which your child breathes in through a small nose mask while remaining awake throughout the appointment. The dosage is quickly and easily adjustable and effects set in within a few minutes.

Of course, protective numbness from local anesthetic is still used whenever necessary, since nitrous oxide reduces anxiety but does not eliminate pain by itself.

What Your Child Experiences (The Feelings)

Children often describe feeling warm, light, calm, or even a little silly. Some say their arms and legs feel heavy, while others simply notice they aren't as worried about what's happening. Crucially, they're able to hear the dentist, answer simple questions, and follow directions.

What Parents See in the Chair

Parents generally notice that their child simply appears more relaxed, perhaps smiling or giggling more. Most importantly, they’re often far less focused on the dental procedure.

How It Wears Off

One advantage of nitrous oxide is how quickly it leaves the body. After treatment, children breathe pure oxygen for several minutes and are usually back to their regular daily activities almost immediately.

Level 2: Moderate Sedation (The Drowsy and Forgetful Stage)

What Is It and How Is It Given?

Some children benefit from moderate sedation, which may involve carefully selected medications that keep them much more relaxed during treatment. Unlike minimal sedation, children become noticeably drowsy but remain conscious and able to respond to gentle stimulation.

What Your Child Experiences (The Feelings)

Though many children drift in and out of light sleep, they generally briefly open their eyes or respond to simple instructions. With moderate sedation kids remain peaceful throughout treatment, with little awareness of how much time has passed and little memory of the procedure afterward.

The "Magic" Amnesia Effect

Certain sedation medications reduce a child's ability to remember the appointment, which can prevent frightening dental memories from developing. That doesn't mean your child is unconscious; they simply won't recall much, if any, of the procedure afterward.

Recovery takes longer than with nitrous oxide, so expect your child to remain sleepy for several hours following their appointment.

Level 3: Deep Sedation and General Anesthesia (The Deep Sleep Stage)

When Is It Necessary?

Deep sedation or general anesthesia allow comprehensive care to be completed while the child remains completely asleep. It is typically reserved for children who require extensive treatment, cannot safely cooperate because of age or developmental factors, have extreme dental anxiety, or have special healthcare needs that make traditional treatment difficult.

What Your Child Experiences (The Feelings)

From your child's perspective, there are very few "feelings" to describe. They fall asleep before treatment begins and wake up after it's finished with no memory of the procedure itself. Reassuringly for parents and kids alike, the experience basically feels like a nap.

The Safety Supervision Team

General anesthesia involves continuous monitoring by qualified medical professionals using specialized equipment that tracks breathing, heart rate, oxygen levels, and other vital signs throughout the procedure. Every member of the care team has a clearly defined role to ensure your child's safety from beginning to end.

Post-Appointment Recovery: What to Expect at Home

Recovery depends on the type of sedation used. Children who receive nitrous oxide typically resume normal activities almost immediately. Those receiving moderate sedation or general anesthesia may remain sleepy, unsteady, or less energetic for the rest of the day. It's also common for children to be a little clingy, emotional, or groggy during the first several hours.

Regardless of sedation type, we recommend a post-procedure diet of soft foods and plenty of fluids. It’s also a good idea to keep activities calm and quiet as your child recovers. Also, before you leave, our team will review personalized aftercare instructions, explain what's considered normal, and let you know when to call if you have concerns.
