Sometimes, getting your child to brush and, eventually, floss their teeth is challenging. Then, some kids clean their teeth haphazardly and don’t spend enough time.

Below, your child’s dentist in Castle Pines, CO, and our team have compiled some tips to encourage your child to brush and floss on schedule and with more enthusiasm.

#1 Make Brushing and Flossing a Game

Today, some toothbrushes play music while children brush and floss their teeth. The song is timed to indicate how long your child should spend brushing. Alternatively, you can play a favorite song to accompany your child’s oral hygiene session. The music should be two to three minutes in length.

#2 Praise Their Efforts

Let your child know that you are proud of or impressed by their initiative and that you think they’re doing an excellent job caring for their teeth with the toothbrush and toothpaste.

#3 Let Your Child Choose

If the toothbrush is soft-bristled and the American Dental Association approves the toothpaste and floss, it is perfectly fine to let your child choose their own toothbrush and toothpaste flavor.

Modern toothbrushes for kids often come in popular character motifs or animal themes.

#4 Don’t Forget the Tooth Fairyfather teaching his daughter how to brush her teeth

Talk to your child about the tooth fairy, letting them know that the fairy prefers to find teeth under the pillow free from tooth decay.

#5 Let Our Team Help

We enjoy forming strong bonds with the children we treat and can often talk to them about their teeth. We can explain why brushing and flossing are so crucial. Additionally, we can praise their efforts when they present with a cavity-free checkup or improved brushing and flossing.
