Even before your baby flashes that very first toothy grin, their smile is already hard at work behind the scenes. As your trusted pediatric dentist in Highlands Ranch, we love helping families build strong dental habits from the very beginning. Here’s your baby-friendly guide to caring for those tiny teeth before they even arrive.

Caring for Gums Before Their Teeth Emerge

Yes, you can start oral care before the teeth show up! After feedings, gently wipe your baby’s gums with a clean, damp washcloth or a soft silicone finger brush. This keeps their mouth clean and gets your little one used to having their mouth cared for. Babies don’t need a toothbrush quite yet!

Teething and Their First Teeth

Teething usually begins around six months, but every baby is different. You’ll likely notice extra drooling, fussiness, and lots of chewing. As those first little teeth pop through, keep their gums soothed with a cool teething ring (not frozen) and lots of cuddles. Once the first tooth appears, it’s time to start brushing twice a day.

Brushing Those Pearly Whites (or Just the First Few)

It might seem silly to brush just one or two teeth, but it’s a big step in your baby’s oral health. Use a small, soft-bristled baby toothbrush and a rice-sized smear of toothpaste. Gently brush in tiny circles. Don’t worry if they squirm around or are a bit of a wiggle worm. Consistency is key, not perfection.

Fluoride Toothpaste: Friend or Foe?

Fluoride is your baby’s cavity-fighting superhero as long as it’s used in the right amount. That tiny rice-sized smear is enough to protect their teeth without overdoing it. As they grow and can spit reliably (around age 3), you can upgrade to a pea-sized amount.

The First Dental Visit: When and Why

Your child’s first dental visit should happen by their first birthday or within six months of their first tooth erupting. It’s quick, gentle, and sets the stage for a lifetime of positive dental experiences. At your baby's dental appointment, we’ll check for early signs of decay, answer your questions, and help your child feel at home in the dental chair.

Maintaining Healthy Habits as They Grow

As more teeth come in, keep up the brushing routine and begin flossing once two teeth touch. Limit sugary snacks and drinks, especially juice and gummy treats. Encourage water between meals, and make dental visits a regular part of your child’s routine.

Remember, a healthy smile starts early, and you’re doing an amazing job getting them there.
