Your child’s teeth are precious to us at Sierk Children’s Dentistry, so you can rest assured that a tooth extraction is always our last resort. If we have another avenue to save their tooth, we will take it. But when it needs to happen, our team will treat all patients with kindness and respect.
Once we’ve removed a damaged tooth, your child’s first concern is recovery. With proper attention, the first two days after extraction will put your child on the path to healing. By the end of the initial week, the hard part will be behind you, and we can discuss any long-term restorations, such as a spacer in case of an extracted baby tooth.
Our team has some tips that will help your child’s speedy recuperation.
Immediately after Your Child’s Tooth Extraction in Highlands Ranch
When we remove a tooth, it leaves behind a gap we call an empty socket. So job one is to protect this socket and the blood clot that forms within it. If we’ve placed gauze in that space, we recommend keeping it in a few hours (or as long as possible) so a solid clot may form.
Then, follow these guidelines for the next two days:
- They should rest for the first 36 hours.
- Elevate their head slightly when they sleep.
- Don't drink hot beverages and no drinking through a straw.
- Instruct them to keep their tongue away from the socket.
- Reduce swelling with a cold compress or ice pack on their cheek.
For up to a week post-extraction, your child should only eat soft foods, soup, yogurt, smoothies, and similar foods. Also, have them avoid strenuous exercise. This should help keep their socket sealed so that it can heal naturally.
If your child complains of sharp pain or soreness several days after extraction or has a fever, you should contact our dental office immediately so we can check for an open or dry socket and potential infection.
