Fluoride

How Fluoride Can Help Your Child’s Oral Health

Tooth decay is the most common dental problem among children, and fluoride combats tooth decay and cavities as a preventive dental measure that strengthens enamel. Dr. Jonathan Sierk and his friendly staff can provide education and treatment for adding fluoride to your child’s oral health routine.

At Sierk Children’s Dentistry, we offer the following fluoride treatments to help children maintain a healthy smile:

  • Standard Fluoride Varnish
  • Silver Diamine Fluoride
  • Sealants

What is Fluoride and Why Do We Need it?

Fluoride is a mineral that strengthens enamel, the outer layer of the tooth, making it a highly effective agent in the fight for healthier teeth and gums. Because it strengthens enamel, fluoride helps to protect the soft center of the tooth that contains the pulp and nerves.

Fluoride protection is vital for infants and children from six months upward as their primary teeth develop. During these formative years, fluoride offers a boost to tooth health and additional protection as permanent teeth emerge.

The Benefits of Fluoride

Topical fluoride strengthens teeth by infusing the mineral into the tooth enamel, strengthening the tooth. Fluoride combines with the minerals in our enamel and forms a strong bond, one that is resistant to decay.

Fluoride & Sealant Treatments at Sierk Children’s Dentistry

Sealants are usually resin based and sticky. When applied to hard to reach areas like the back molars, they are very effective in preventing decay.

Fluoride can be applied topically or taken in oral tablets. A topical fluoride varnish coats the teeth to provide protection and re-mineralization. Ingesting fluoride can help replenish calcium and phosphorus to keep teeth strong.

Silver diamine fluoride is a cavity treatment, as opposed to a preventive measure like traditional fluoride. Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) is composed of silver, water, fluoride, and ammonia. It is applied topically to areas affected by cavities to stop them from progressing.

Sealants, fluoride, and SDF are all helpful for treating children and special needs patients who may have a difficult time keeping up with a thorough oral health routine.

Although the ADA recommends brushing with fluoride toothpaste twice a day and drinking water that contains fluoride, additional topical applications of fluoride can offer a long-lasting defense against tooth decay and cavities.
